At Debla there is always something interesting going on, both inside and outside the classroom. Each week, the school offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities so students can enjoy their free time and get to know the city of Málaga. We offer activities from 2€ per person. Our staff will inform you about the Spanish level recommended to participate in each of the activities.
Taking part in a language exchange will not only help improve your Spanish but will also give you the chance to meet local students as well as other students from all over the world.
At Debla we teach both Spanish and classical guitar.
Combine your Spanish language course with one of our guitar lessons. Designed for those students who are interested in immersing themselves in the Spanish culture by learning to play the Spanish instrument par excellence: the Spanish guitar. These are one-to-one courses available to students of all levels. There is no need to bring a guitar as Debla will loan you one.
Visit to Malaga on the first (free)
On Mondays Debla offers new students a guided visit to Malaga city centre. During this visit our expert guide provides cultural information as well as interesting facts about the most important museums and monuments in Malaga. Our guide will also give some practical advice to help you find your way around the city.
This activity is free of charge and is designed to introduce students to both Malaga and it´s culture as well as other new students.
Debla also offers a variety of cultural visits in order to show students Malaga´s important heritage. Each week we offer guided visits to the city´s main museums and monuments such as: The Picasso Museum, The Thyssen Museum, The Pompidou Centre, The Cathedral, Gibralfaro Castle and The Alcazaba, to name but a few.
There is no better way to discover Andalusia’s popular and traditional dance than by experiencing it firsthand. At Debla we offer students the chance to enjoy a live flamenco show at one of Malaga’s oldest “peñas flamencas”, also considered to be a Flamenco Art Museum and declared to be of public interest. With us you will experience a characteristic show of this beautiful Andalusian art form!
PHOTOGRAPHY CONTESTS & CULTURAL TREASURE HUNTS
Our photography competition is designed for students who come to Debla as part of an organised group. It consists of students taking to the streets of Malaga and putting together a photographic collage by capturing pictures related to the city and its culture. The collages created by the students are submitted to a vote on social network and the group winners are presented with a variety of prizes.
We also organise cultural treasure hunts which take part in Malaga´s historical centre. Students work as part of a team following clues and asking questions to locals on the street in an attempt to find the answers to the questions provided by Debla. Once the teams have solved the clues and have managed to overcome all the challenges posed, they must return to the arranged meeting point. The group that completes the tasks the quickest receives a surprise!
These types of activities are intended to encourage teamwork among the students in completing a common goal, while also practicing and using the Spanish language they are learning with the locals in Malaga.
VISITS TO SPANISH BUSINESSES
At Debla, for those students who are interested, we arrange visits to a selection of Spanish businesses. Some of the businesses included in our visits are as follows:
Visit to the “San Miguel” brewery in Malaga
Students will receive a tour of the facilities while also learning about the brewing process and the history of its production. At the end of the visit, students are invited to sample the different variety of beers produced at the factory as well as taste a selection of tapas.
This visit is free of charge and lasts approximately two hours.
Visit to the “Bodega Quitapenas” (Quitapenas Wine Cellar)
Another cultural visit arranged by Debla is a visit to the “Bodega Quitapenas”, one of the oldest and most traditional wine cellars in Malaga. This is where the most famous wine of our region, “el vino dulce” (sweet wine), is produced.
The visit includes a tour of the cellars where an expert guide will explain the process involved in creating this precious wine which you will also be welcome to sample.
Visit to the Chamber of Commerce (Malaga)
At Debla, we also offer students the chance to visit Malaga´s Chamber of Commerce, a public corporation dedicated to developing and promoting trade, tourism, training, new technologies as well as assistance and advice to those local companies and businesses looking to grow and outsource.
SPORTS & WATER ACTIVITIES
If you are passionate about sports, the water and the beach, you will enjoy the sporting activities that our Spanish school in Malaga has to offer.
Paddle boarding is quite popular in Malaga at the moment. It is a relatively easy sport to pick up involving patience and balance, riding your surf board while standing with the help of a paddle. Fancy giving it a go? We strongly recommend this sport as a fun and exciting activity which is suitable for everyone!
Other water activities include kayaking where accompanied by friendly, fun and qualified instructors; students can enjoy a scenic tour of some of our natural surroundings. Instructors will teach students balance and how to work as a team. Fun is guaranteed!
Furthermore, at Debla we organise beach volley ball as well as some football games with locals, for the footie aficionados amongst you, not only to encourage a healthy game but also an opportunity for students to practice Spanish at their leisure. All the activities are conducted in Spanish, allowing a perfect mixture of having fun and experiencing new things with learning the language, not to mention the fact that they’re a great way to make friends!
Ping pong tournaments are organised against the teachers on the school grounds. It’s a fun and relaxed activity bringing both student and teachers together, fostering a friendly and chilled out atmosphere. The tournament includes trophies and prizes which are presented to the winners after the final game is played.
FLAMENCO, SALSA AND BACHATA LESSONS
If you are planning to learn Spanish in Malaga with us and enjoy dancing then our dance lessons; flamenco, salsa and bachata are a perfect option to complement your study abroad experience!
The “Sevillanas” lesson brings us closer to the world of flamenco and the popular and lively festivals of Andalusia introducing students to the song, dance and music that make up this artistic expression. With this activity our students can discover the passion and emotions expressed through foot stomping and hand clapping while learning to dance the traditional and popular “Sevillanas” dance, danced at any Andalusian party.
However, if salsa and bachata are more to your liking, you are in luck! At Debla, we have teachers who are specialised in this Latin art form and we offer group lessons that will make your stay with us even more enjoyable.
WELCOME & FAREWELL DRINK (FREE)
We like to welcome our new students to Debla by offering them a welcome drink, where they can meet and chat with other students as well as the Debla team who also take part in this event.
Our farewell drink is our way of saying “hasta pronto” to those students who are leaving us. This event is for those who have reached the end of their Spanish language course and their stay in Malaga.
Both of these events are free of charge and involve a drink and some appetizers in the school garden or terrace.
“SAFARI DE BARES” (TAPAS TOUR)
At Debla, we believe that one of the best ways to learn the Spanish language and culture is by sharing your experiences with companions outside of the classroom. We therefore suggest and recommend a tour of the most mythical and old taverns and bars of Malaga´s historical centre. An evening on the town where students can discover Malaga from an insiders perspective, experiencing firsthand Malaga’s cuisine, tasting traditional and typical Spanish dishes (paella, ham, Spanish omelette, cheese, Spanish potato salad, fried fish, etc.) and drinks such as Malaga´s sweet wine, summer red (“tinto de verano”), mojito but to name a few. If you are a food lover, this tour is a MUST!
WINE & TAPAS TASTING, PARTIES & BBQS
One of the many pleasures of living in Malaga is the warm Mediterranean climate which lasts almost all year round. At Debla we like to take advantage of this by organising and hosting parties in the school garden: wine and tapas tasting, theme parties and barbecues. You will be able to enjoy a perfect evening in our school garden tasting traditional Spanish dishes and typical wine, all in good company of course.
One of our favourite activities is our Spanish cooking lesson. What better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than through its cuisine. Discover with us how to cook and prepare some of Spain´s most traditional and tasty dishes; Spanish omelette, paella, gazpacho not to mention tapas! Following preparation the fun continues as we get to relax and sample our dishes.
